Why Discipline beats Motivation – The Secret to Long-Term Success

Discipline

There's always that time when we feel motivated. We start the new year with an inspiring video, or quote, and we're off and running.

However, that enthusiasm quickly dissipates after a couple of days.

The alarm sounds less loud, the gym is more convenient to put off, and work that we've been putting off remains on our to-do list. Here is where most give up.

The reality is, motivation is fleeting but discipline is consistent.

Why Discipline beats Motivation – The Secret to Long-Term Success

What is the difference?

Motivation is an emotion. It goes when it feels right, when it's time, when it's in your head, and it doesn't when it's not.

Discipline is a way of doing things. It enables you to act when you feel you don't have the urge.

Successful people are not productive people who are always motivated. The reason they're productive is that they have established systems that enable them to remain consistent.

Why Discipline Wins

Suppose that two people want to become fit.

The first person exercises when s/he feels motivated.

Second person works out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, no matter how he feels.

One year later, whom would you like to have better results?

The answer is obvious. Consistency beats intensity.

Little things done many times are extraordinary over time.

How to Build Discipline

1. Make Starting Easy

If you were thinking of studying for four hours, make it ten minutes instead.

It is always a challenge to start. Starting is the hardest part; after that, it's much simpler.

For me personally I become super productive if I'm wired in to some kind of music. It makes me to work for long hours.

Every one is different so try to find out your sweet spot- to get started !

2. Design a simple row.

Minimize decision making prior to work.

For example:

Set your intentions right. Plan what work are you going to do. I personally do list out 3 to 5 things daily for the day. That's it.

Set a timer.

Open your homework. Unfold your homework.

Begin immediately.

If you do the same thing each day, your brain begins to make the connection between it and showing some focus.

3. Focus on Consistency, Not Perfection

Consistency

If you miss one day, it won't be the end of the world.

The only thing that is important is to get back on the track as soon as possible.

Success is not a matter of never failing, it's a matter of never giving up.

Final Thoughts

While motivation may help you get started, discipline is what helps you to go on.

To achieve your goals, don't wait till you feel like it. Develop the automatic action habits.

Remember:

Motivation doesn't raise you to its own level. You are as low as your systems.

Get going with those systems up and running now, and your future self will thank you!
